Common confusions

• It makes no difference if the thing that is owned is singular or plural, just check whether there is one or more owner.

• Pronouns such as hers, his, yours, ours, theirs or its (when it means belongs to) do not need apostrophes to show possession.

• However, if you want to use ‘One’s family’, you do need an apostrophe.

• There are some pairs of words, one with an apostrophe and one without, which sound the same but have different meanings. Below are some examples.
